래그돌(Ragdoll), 줄여서 랙돌이라고 부르기도하는 이 고양이는 안아올리면 인형처럼 축 늘어져서 반항하지 않고 사람에게 몸을 맡긴다고하여 ‘봉제인형’이라는 뜻을 가진 ‘래그돌(Ragdoll)’이라고 품종이름을 지었다고 합니다
물론 개묘차가 있어서 안기기 싫어하는 랙돌도 있습니다
역사
1960년대 미국 캘리포니아의 안 베이커(Ann Baker)라는 브리더에 의해 만들어진 품종입니다
안 베이커는 조세핀(Josephine)이라는 이름을 가진 앙고라 계열이자 여러 혈통이 섞인 하얀 장모종 고양이를 발견하였고
긴 털을 가진 조세핀의 새끼 중에서 얌전한 특징을 보이는 새끼들을 버만 또는 버미즈와 같은 외형을 지닌 고양이와 교배시켜서 만들어낸 품종입니다
앤 베이커는 또한 랙돌을 전통적인 고양이협회에 등록시키지 않고 대신 국제랙돌고양이협회(International Ragdoll Cat Association)를 만들었고 ‘랙돌’이란 명칭을 상표 등록하여 국제랙돌고양이협회에서만 이와 같은 호칭을 사용할 수 있었으며 이곳에 등록한 랙돌을 다른 고양이협회에 등록할 수 없게 제한을 두었습니다
2005년에 ‘랙돌’에 대한 등록이 만료되었고 이로인해 좀 더 많은 사람들이 랙돌을 가까이 접할 수 있게 되었습니다
성격
온화하며 조용하고 차분한 성격입니다
또한 주인에 대한 사랑이 깊고 애교가 많습니다
그리고 사회성, 친화력이 좋아서 다른 동물(고양이, 개 등)과도 잘 어울리며 낯을 잘 가리지 않아서 모르는 사람이 안아도 잘 안기는 편입니다
특징
푸른 눈을 가지고 있으며 뚜렷한 털 색깔이 특징입니다
또한 뱃살이 많은 것이 특징으로 체중이 적게 나가더라도 뱃살이 있습니다
그래서 체중을 판단할 때에는 갈비뼈를 만져서 갈비뼈가 만져져야 비만이 아닙니다
성장
랙돌은 성장이 느린 고양이로 생후 2~3년이 지나야 털의 무늬나 색깔이 완전히 자리잡히며 생후 4년정도 되어야 완전히 성장합니다
크기
메인쿤, 노르웨이숲처럼 몸집이 큰 대형종으로 보통 수컷이 암컷보다 크기가 큽니다
암컷은 4~7kg 정도이며 수컷은 7~9kg정도 나가며 처음 1년간은 다른 고양이들처럼 한 달에 약 450g씩 체중이 늘어나며 그 이후에는 생후 3~4년이 될 때까지 몇 번 쑥쑥 자라는 기간이 있는데 갑자기 식사량이 늘어나면 성장기가 다가오는 것으로 비만이 아니라면 고양이가 원하는 만큼 먹게 해주는 것이 좋습니다
드물게 비만고양이가 아니면서 16kg 가까이 나가는 수컷도 있다고 합니다
털
중장모종으로 털이 길고 풍성하며 안쪽에 솜털이 없어서 털날림은 덜한 편입니다
털날림은 덜해도 다른 고양이들 못지않게 털이 빠지므로 일주일에 2~3회정도 빗질을 해주는 것이 좋습니다
털이 부드러워서 빗질이 어렵지 않으며 무겁거나 저자 엉키는 털이 아니므로 부드러운 모를 가진 빗이 좋습니다
털색
씰(Seal), 블루(Blue), 초콜릿(Chocolate), 라일락(lilac, 라벤더), 레드(Red), 크림(Cream)이 있습니다
유전병
대체로 건강한 품종으로 아직까지 알려진 특별한 유전병은 없다고 합니다
